Fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara announced his retirement with immediate effect at a Press conference on Thursday but there has been confusion over his exit with some claiming he was not in line for World Cup selection after he declined to play in a Provincial tournament.

Kulasekara however denied he refused to play in the Provincial tournament that was the criteria for World Cup selection.

“I never refused to play,” he told the Sunday Observer when the question was put to him.

“I played (domestic cricket) for Colts and then went to Australia for 12 months where I played club cricket and returned to the country in April and was available.”

But team manager Charith Senanayake making a comment on social media claimed Kulasekara told him he was not interested in the Provincial tournament.

“I am not supporting or siding with anyone.

“When I spoke to Kulasekara as the manager of the Colombo team, he declined to play in the Provincial tournament, politely.

“Kule had his reasons and we all respected his decision. I don’t think Ashantha (De Mel-head selector) said that he does not know Kule.

“People should not castigate others, incorrectly or jump in to conclusions hastily. Please correct me if I am wrong,” Senanayake said.
