New features at Build SL Expo

The Chamber of Construction Industry Sri Lanka launched the Build Sri Lanka Housing and Construction International Expo 2020 due to be held next May.

Speaking on the trajectory of modernity that the country has embarked on, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawake said that Sri Lanka has executed construction work worth Rs. 1 trillion annually during the past three years.

“Half of Sri Lanka’s growth should be attributed to the contributions made by the construction industry. Most of the construction activities were seen in the apartment and hotels sector and six million square feet of office space too were added to meet the rising demand for this segment,” he said.

He said that the UDA too, has been involved in adding infrastructure beautifying the city. “We are converting the Meetotamulla garbage dump into a green park.”

The Beira Lake boat service has been launched, while the much awaited Light Rail system too is being implemented. The Minister spoke of the trajectory of modernity that the country has embarked on and vowed that soon Sri Lanka would be made a country of preferred choice to live in.

The Minister said that the Chamber should target this Expo as a regional Construction Exhibition in future, which would be sought by many international companies and visitors. He also appealed to the builders and investors to avoid looking only at quantity, but also quality.

“Respect for the environment, energy conservation and garbage disposal is very important, while green practices too should be adopted,” the Minister said.

The President of the Chamber of Construction thanked the Minister for allocating a block of land to the Chamber for a secretariat building that would house many professional associations within these confines.

“We have included new features at the forthcoming exhibition, such as the incorporation of an international exhibition partner from New York showcasing worldwide products and also a special German pavilion displaying German products courtesy the Chamber of Trade and Commerce of the Germany. The exhibition will be a platform to showcase the latest development of the industry while facilitating business contact set up and building market linkages,” he said.

The main sponsors of the upcoming Build Sri Lanka 2020 were felicitated by the Chamber as well as those who made Build SL 2019 a success.

The Chamber also conferred on Dr. Surath Wickramasinghe, the founder President of The Chamber of Construction Industry Sri Lanka, with honourary life membership in consideration of his yeoman service to the Chamber and the construction industry in general.

The exhibition which is the premier Expo in this field will be held from May 22-24 May, 2020 at the BMICH with nearly 350 stalls.

The Chamber will strive to host the most globally represented and sophisticated Housing and Construction Exhibition in South Asia in the near future.
