27 October, 2019

Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Rajitha Senaratne has slammed the former President and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa for the grave atrocities committed during their tenure in office. Speaking to reporters at the party headquarters in Sirikotha on Friday (25), he questioned does not Ahimsa Wickrematunge, the daughter of slain Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge have the right to fight for the justice of her father?

It’s for this reason that she sought the assistance of the courts but her case was dismissed. Won’t we do the same had our kith or kin been murdered? he questioned. He lashed out at Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa for being selfish and betraying the country.

“Rajapaksa maintained he had acted solely as a government official. During the war, he had quit the Army, citing he was suffering from mental depression,” he said.

The United National Party (UNP) denied any links with regard to the alleged killings during the war. Senaratne was of the view the present administration worked in the larger interest of the country. “Sajith Premadasa has challenged Gotabaya for a debate on the pressing-problems in the country. So far there has not been a response from Gotabaya.President Sirisena did the same to his predecessor inviting him for a dabate in 2015.
