Sunday Observer exposure forces secretary’s resignation : Misuse of Wrestling funds saga takes another turn

19 January, 2020

Following an investigation by the Sunday Observer over the alleged mismanagement of funds at the Sri Lanka Wrestling Federation, its secretary MACK Mallawarachchi has tendered his resignation.

Colombo District Wrestling Association secretary HM Luxman said that all allegations against the Committee were proved to be correct going by evidence unearthed. Mallawarachchi was mainly accused of allegedly submitting false documents to the Ministry of Sports while the current office bearers of the Sri Lanka Wrestling Federation (SLWF) is alleged to have mismanaged funds to the tune of Rs. 3 million during the past three years which were also under investigation. Former head coach of the SLWF Shanthi Lal charged that current assistant director general of Sports Development RB Wickramasinghe showed little or no interest during the investigations for the past three years despite continuous appeals made through the districts associations many times.

A few months ago the Ministry of Sports appointed a three-member independent committee to investigate the allegations. The three-member committee consisted of KS Perera, who was its chairman along with LG Wijesinghe (member) and NK Abeysinghe (member) who finally confirmed that mismanagement of funds took place and forged documents were submitted by the current SLWF. Shanthi Lal further said that the Committee’s report revealed that the current president RVP Perera and Mallawarachchi were aware of the mismanagement of funds.

They (current office bears) are also alleged to have used the funds without proper audited statements.

Shanthi Lal said that Mallawarachchi’s resignation had proved that mismanagement of funds had in fact taken place.
