5 July, 2020

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) hopes to record statements from the former Advisor to the Prime Minister R.Paskaralingam and the former People’s Bank General Manager Wasantha Kumar, over the Central Bank Treasury Bond scam, in addition to the former President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. On June 18, the Attorney General Dappula de Livera, PC, had instructed the acting Inspector General of Police to record statements of former President Sirisena, former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, S.Paskaralingam, former advisor to Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and a former bank official over the Central Bank Bond Scam.

According to a court order, former Prime Minister and the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department on Friday, July 3.

A CID team visited former Prime Minister’s residence in Kollupitiya around 4 pm on Friday and left after recording his statement for four hours.

The CID initially sought a statement from the former Prime Minister on June 26 but he didn’t turn up on that day. However, CID officials who had met Wickremesinghe on June 29, called for a statement on June 30, but he told the CID that he was unable to do so as he had to attend a ceremony at the Nalandarama temple and he agreed to call over at the CID on July 3.

The Central Bank Bond scam had taken place when Wickremesinghe was the Prime Minister and former Minister Ravi Karunanayake was the Finance Minister.

Wickremesinghe was instrumental in appointing former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran in 2015 and later made him an advisor after his removal.
