No reorganisation of UNP needed - Vajira Abeywardana

9 August, 2020

Former Minister and UNP Galle District candidate Vajira Abeywardana said despite the UNP’s heavy defeat at the August 5 general election no reorganisation of the UNP was needed at this time.

Abeywardana told the media in Galle that his party would not be deterred by the defeat at the general election but will make it a launching pad to drive the party towards victory at future elections while rectifying its mistakes. He said, “The majority of the people in the country have given the SLPP a resounding mandate and we wholeheartedly acknowledge that victory.”

He said, “This is not the only time the UNP had been defeated. We have faced defeats on various occasions. We are confident that despite the SLPP’s big victory, the Government will not be able to cope with the economic hardships that the people would face in the future.”

Abeywardana said the Government has obtained a larger number of votes than the total number of votes secured by all Opposition parties in the election fray. “It was a decision taken by the majority of the people in the country. However, no reorganisation of the UNP is needed at this time. A party should have strict discipline. In the future, tough decisions will be taken on discipline in the party. We will develop the UNP at the grassroots level, he added.
