UNP Leader Ranil to give evidence

Former Prime Minister and United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will appear before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) on Political Victimisation and the Police Unit of the PCoI on the Easter Sunday attacks this week.

Wickremesinghe has been summoned to the PCoI on the Easter Sunday attacks on Tuesday (18) and to the PCoI on Political Victimisation on Friday (21).

The Police Unit of the Easter Sunday PCoI is seeking to record a statement from the former Prime Minister on the Easter Sunday attacks carried out last year by nine suicide bombers belonging to extremist group National Thawheed Jamaat (NTJ), killing 258 people. The Police investigation unit has also summoned Former Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayake and Former Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene on the same day.

Former Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka, Mangala Samaraweera, Malik Samarawickrama and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka have also been summoned before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) on Political Victimisation on Friday.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader R Sampanthan, TNA MP M A Sumanthiran and former MP Dr Jayampathy Wickramaratne have also been summoned before the Commission on the same day.

They have been summoned to inquire into a complaint to the Commission by former Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development Dr. Nihal Jayathilake. According to the complainant, he was arrested and remanded for providing relief to a group of people under the Isurumlath Housing Scheme and compensation and gratuity to a group in the Divi Neguma Department. The complainant said he was politically victimised due the defendants’ action.
