Matale Mayor Daljith Aluvihare has been temporarily removed from his post with immediate effect by Central Province Governor Lalith U. Gamage.
Deputy Mayor Sandanam Prakash has been appointed as the acting Mayor through a gazette notification. Meanwhile retired High Court Judge Sarojani Kusala Weerawardena has been appointed to look into allegations against Aluvihare.
These measures have been taken by the Governor with the powers vested with him and were published in the Government Gazette notification on August 25.
Sources said that several persons including the deputy mayor have made complaints against the conduct of the Mayor to the Governor.
