20A - Petitions in Supreme Court on Tuesday

Petitions filed against the 20th Amendment to the Constitution will be taken up for hearing in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, September 29.

The draft 20th Amendment Bill was tabled in Parliament last week.

A special five-judge bench has been appointed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya to hear the 18 petitions.The petitioners have cited the Attorney General as the respondent. Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya will preside over the five-member Judge bench. The other four are Supreme Court Justices Buwaneka Aluwihare, Priyantha Jayawardena, Vijith Malalgoda and Sisira de Abrew.

The petitions were filed by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader parliamentarian R. Sampanthan, Anil Kariyawasam, public interest litigation activist Nagananda Kodituwakku, Executive Director, Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, Attorney-at-Law Indika Gallage, former Governor, Southern Province and former Executive Director, Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) Ranjith Keerthi Tennakoon, Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL), human rights activist Abdul Sanun and three civilians, S.C.C. Illangavon, Lohini Fernando and Lakmal Jayakody.
