Former St. Anthony’s College and Kandy CC fast bowler Jayampathy Weerasekera passed away at the age of 73 and his funeral was held last week (December 26) at the Mahiyawa cemetery.

He was not only regarded as a top class fast bower but also a capable allrounder and one of the highlights of Jayampathy’s career was that he took a match bag of eight wickets in the big match against Trinity College in 1967.

He took 6 for 33 in 19.4 overs in the first innings clean bowling four batsmen and in the second innings plucked 2 for 8. Jayampathy first played for the Antonians under Christopher Sims in 1967 and took 60 wickets in ten games during that season. Along with Bernard Balaraj, he formed a very fine opening bowling attack for the Antonians and was also a top hard hitting batsmen and a safe fielder. He also opened bowling for Central Province Schools.

After leaving school he joined the Bank of Ceylon and also played football for the bank side while playing for Old Antonians SC and Kandy CC in the Donovan Andree cricket tournament. He was at one time in the Committee of the Kandy District and Central Province Cricket Association.
