Miley Cyrus : releases single dedicated to her dog

17 January, 2021

“MJ was a true queen.”

Miley Cyrus commemorated the life of her beloved dog, Mary Jane, with the release of a previously unheard song. On Thursday, January 7, Miley announced that the pit bull mix had passed, and as a means of looking back on the pup’s legacy, the star later posted her track, “Mary Jane 5EVR.”

Sharing the single on Friday, January 8, Miley explained that she had first written the track in her Malibu, California home, which was later lost in 2018, due to California wildfires. In revisiting the song now, Miley recognized how much has changed within the last few years.

Despite continued and significant change, Miley shared how she’s managed to find comfort, writing, “Music is my medicine. This song revolves around loss & heartache. Which I am currently experiencing after Mary Jane’s passing.”

She continued, writing, “MJ was a true queen. She wore her grace, dignity & kindness like a crown. She will never be forgotten and will forever be missed. To know her is to love her. It has been my honor being her mom and best friend.”

Pairing the single with a slideshow of images that featured MJ, the track has Miley singing, “I wish you looked at me / the way you looked at Mary Jane.”

As People reports, Mary Jane was diagnosed with a cancer nearly a year ago. Following her immediate passing, Miley had shared how she was feeling in now-expired Instagram Story posts.

“Anyone who knows me & it doesn’t have to be well is aware that my best friend in the whole world is a rescued pit bull mix named Mary Jane…I thanked her repeatedly as she took her last breath for who and what she was been to me.

“It was something more than a friend or family member. Something so different. You can’t define it.”
