Husbands slay two wives

Ampara, Ginigathena: Two women have been slain by their husbands in separate incidents in Ampara and Ginigathena on Friday, the police said yesterday.

According to police, a 24-year old woman was hacked to death by her 33-year-old husband in Uhana, Ampara, while a 27-year old woman was killed by her 34-year-old husband in Ginigathena.

“A program will be initiated shortly at police stations to resolve family disputes at the earliest,” an official said.

Poacher’s guilt leads to resolve mysterious killing

MATALE: A poacher who is alleged to have killed a man after his trap gun accidentally went-off was nabbed two months after the incident when he sent an anonymous letter to the local police that provided details of the victim’s make-shift grave.

Working on the letter written in poor Sinhala, mufti-clad detectives focused on the area bearing the postal seal and soon realised they were in notorious poaching territory.

After a quick probe, sleuths closed in on their suspect who packed a record for poaching. The man was arrested and after questioning, confessed to the crime. The suspect was also caught on security cameras while mailing the letter to the police. He told the police that he had dumped the body of the victim into an abandoned lime pit for fear of being caught. The decomposed remains of the victim were identified by relatives from his clothes.

Investigations have revealed that the victim had entered the forest to collect firewood when the incident occurred place.

A detective said that the suspect had apparently sent the letter since he could not contain the guilt.

WPC opts for easy way out

HAMBEGAMUWA: A Woman Police Constable (WPC) hanged herself in the family home following a dispute with her husband at Milwela, Hambegamuwa on Tuesday, police said yesterday.

They said the 41-year-old mother of two was attached to the Hambegamuwa Police. Initial investigations have revealed that the WPC had committed suicide after her husband is alleged to have refused to care for her elder child who was in ill health.

Hambegamuwa Police are investigating.

Brother drops dead at sister’s wedding

PILIYANDALA: A 32-year-old father of three dropped dead at his sister’s wedding at Piliyandala yesterday.

The supermarket employee was rushed to the Piliyandala District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police and hospital officials said. They said the man had died of a heart attack and was cleared of Covid-19.

Birds that dodged quarantine netted in

DUNAKADENIYA: A businessman from Kandy was arrested after he allegedly sold exotic birds imported from Kuwait sans the one-month mandatory quarantine, officials said yesterday. They said 14 birds were recovered from a plush private residence in Dunakadeniya, Dumalasooriya earlier this week.It has been revealed that the 14 birds were a part of a flock of 62 that had been imported.

The birds were found by Negombo Police.

Hacking to death: Four persons surrender to police

MEETIYAGODA: Four persons were taken into custody after they were alleged to have hacked a youth to death near a filling station in Meetiyagoda.

The suspects were taken into custody after they surrendered to Meetiyagoda Police. The group is alleged to have chopped the 24-year-old youth to death and later severed the victim’s right arm, according to the police. The police also seized two motorcycles, two knives, a sword and a machete knife, believed to have been used in the killing, in possession of the suspects.

Initial investigations have revealed that the incident had sparked-off over a personal dispute.

Kuttipilli busted in Trincomalee

TRINCOMALEE: A five-member gang known as ‘Kuttipili’ or Small Tigers was busted in Trincomalee last week, police said.

 According to police, the gang was raided at a safe house in Devanagar-Anandapura by a team from the Special Task Force (STF). A sword, 12 mobile phones, five SIM cards, a camera, a forged passport and a National Identity Card (NIC) was seized from the suspects, police added.

Investigations have revealed that the gang leader is in Remand Prison in connection with a series of crimes. He was identified as B.M. Vijayakantha alias “CID Viji”or “Navy Viji”, police said.

The group was later handed over to Upuveli police for investigations.

Shooter in police net

PANADURA: A man who was allegedly involved in shooting a man to death in a drive by incident at Pallimulla, Panadura on Monday, has been arrested, police said.

They said the 27-year-old suspect is detained further to track down the other suspects.

The gunmen who were riding a motorcycle had opened fire on a group moving in a three wheeler and one occupant who sustained injuries succumbed shortly after admission to Panadura Hospital, police said.

Initial investigations have revealed that the incident may have sparked-off over a turf war by rival gangs.

The victim was a 32-year-old man of Gemunu Mawatha, Keselwatta, Panadura.

Road fiends clam over 40 lives  

COLOMBO: At least 40 persons were killed in road accidents during the past week, a senior police official said yesterday.

Another 189 persons had sustained injuries in 427 road accidents during the week, he said.

Some 119 vehicles were also damaged in the accidents, he added. Most victims in road accidents are motorcyclists and their pillion riders, he said.

Seven persons in hot water over assault

BIYAGAMA: Seven persons have been arrested after social media showed the group assaulting a man as the police allegedly stood idle, officials said.

They said the group was traced at a safe house at Bandarawatte, Biyagama.

A hunt is on four more suspects connected to the incident.

Abduction: Police after gangsters

AHUNGALLE: A 48-year-old man was allegedly abducted from his home at Ahungalle by three persons that had arrived at his residence in a van earlier last week, police said yesterday.

The unidentified group had come in search of the man’s son who was not at home and had later taken away the father instead, the man’s wife told the police.

Ahungalle police have launched a search for the abducted man and those responsible for the incident.
