Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has already moved ahead with the formation of an under-19 pool and have identified talent that began in the Ratnapura district.

Thereafter this pool will come under the district and provincial coaches.

“SLC will focus in going into the grass root level to form the under-19 women’s team. This is with the intention of focusing on the intended Under-19 Women’s World Cup that has been shifted to 2023,” said Apsari Tillekaratne the women’s cricket convenor of SLC.

Originally SLC intended to form an under-23 Emerging Squad but with the ICC organizing the U-19 World Cup the focus has shifted to junior cricket said Tillekaratne.

Seven schools in the Sabaragamuwa province were earmarked for this talent scouting program that included Ratnapura Gankanda Central, Jayanthi MV Chandrikawewa and Kolonna National School.

“Our next step is to offer the infrastructure facilities to help them start on cricket which is new to them,” said Tillekaratne.

“Last year we did a similar program in the Northern and Eastern provinces and next we plan to go to Nuwara Eliya, Badulla and Monaragala districts,” added Tillekaratne.
