Workers husking coconuts

4 April, 2021

Coconuts account for around 12 percent of all agricultural produce in Sri Lanka with the land area under cultivation covering over 409,244 hectares. About 2,500-3,000 million nuts are produced per year. New measures have been introduced to enhance the annual coconut crop to 3,600 million nuts per year. However, the irony is that consumers pay over Rs. 120 for a nut. Here workers husking nuts in a coconut estate. Pic: Wimal Karunatilaka
