The social discourse which elevated him to the office of the President has to be protected always, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said joining the weekly ‘Discussion with the Village’ program in Vavuniya yesterday.

He said unseen forces were rousing anti-Government sentiments whipping up protests against the President. People must be vigilant and wise enough to understand that those who concocted stories about crocodiles and white vans were behind these conspiracies, the President said.

He said the substandard coconut oil was detected due to the strict testing regime introduced by the Government on all imported food items.

The President said he will deliver the promises made to the people and despite huge challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Government is making every effort to build a green economy.  “I am ready to accept criticism if I fail to deliver the promises I made to the people,” he said.

He promised to resolve the long standing drinking water issue of people in Vavuniya within a year.
