Weightlifters to shatter open the doors

Four Sri Lankan weightlifters will take wing to Uzbekistan to compete in the Asian Weightlifting Championship which is scheduled to be held from April 18 to 26 as the first international competition in 16 months.

The team includes Commonwealth Games Silver medallist Indika Dissanayaka (73Kg), Isuru Kumara (55Kg), Thilanka Palangasinghe (61Kg) and Chathurika Priyanthi (81Kg).

“This competition will be considered as a selection trial for the forthcoming 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.

This is viewed as good opportunity for the Sri Lankan lifters to perform at the Asian level after a long period without any competitions due to Global pandemic”, said Indika Dissanayake the 31 year weightlifter from the Navy. Dissanayake further said that all National pool lifters are in good from to focus on international meets .

“When we get that chance we are very keen to take part and this is the good opportunity to measure our talent as well as fulfill the qualification for the Olympics which is our ultimate gold”, he said.

Dissanayake has already won silver medals at the South Asian and Commonwealth Games in the 69 kgs weight category and this time he will compete in the 73kg weight category.

Dissanayake set three new National records at the last World Weightlifting Championships in Thailand that inspired him to go for the 73 kgs.

“Our main focus is to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics and we already having successful training at the National pool under the guidance of National coach R.B Wickramasinghe” added Dissanayake .

Weightlifting is named as a Sri Lanka medal prospect sport and recent results already proved that at international level.

The Sports Ministry has already given the necessary requirements including nutrition allowances to the selected lifters.

“As weightlifters we have to maintain our body weight and it’s very difficult but due to our commitment in this sport we always have to be involved,” said Dissanayake.

Thilanka Palangasinghe the 27 year old lifter who had the chance to take part at the last two Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2018 is also in the strong contingent while Dilanka Isuru Kumara who won the bronze medal at the last 2019 Asian championships in China in the 55kg is expected to do well in the same weight category this time.

The only women’s weightlifter is 29-year old Chathurika Priyanthi who will compete in the 81kg weight class .

National weightlifting coach R.B Wickramasinghe will accompany the team with two assistant coaches Rukshan Gunatilleke and P.KN Dayan while G. Ganeshan is the manager of the team .
