All-island cycle races commence

The all island cycling races for standard cycles and half marathon races for men and women organized by the Ministry of Sports and the State Ministry of Rural and Schools Sports Infrastructure Improvement and Department of Sports Development in conjunction of the Sinhala and Hindu New Year commenced yesterday.

The first event was held yesterday with the cycling races in the Hambantota district. The races started opposite Carlton House in Tangalle covering a distance of 120 kms for men and 80 kms for women. The marathon event will also be conducted concurrently. The men will have to run a distance of 20 kms and the women 10 kms.

Such races will be organized covering all districts at a time that may extend beyond the month of May and June. Other events such as swimming, beach volleyball and beach football will also be conducted during the festive season in every district. Besides, all talented athletes will be selected for further training at a higher level.

The events will be under the patronage of Lanka Sportreizen who are experienced in organizing events of such magnitude and will be sponsored by Nestomalt.
