Did Mahela want chief selector to include uncapped spinner?

18 April, 2021

Sri Lanka’s new cricket team selection panel headed by Promodya Wickremasinghe announced a squad for the upcoming home two Test series against Bangladesh but there had been speculation that former captain Mahela Jayawardena had wanted a player, Prabath Jayasuriya, to be included.

Jayasuriya is an uncapped left arm spinner who crossed over from Colts Cricket Club to the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) that Jayawardena played for.

The selectors had instead picked another uncapped left arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrema to replace Lasith Embuldeniya who has been ruled out following an injury he sustained on the recent tour of the West Indies.

Neither Wickremasinghe nor Jayawardena, who is currently away as coach of the Mumbai Indians at the IPL, could be reached for comment.

But a Sri Lanka Cricket official said there was nothing fishy that took place over the selections.

“I don’t see anything wrong if Mahela had made any inquiry on why a particular player was not selected. After all Mahela was a brilliant player with a clean track record. He must have inquired from Pramodya out of curiosity and does he not have a right to inquire as one of the best followers of the Sri Lanka team,” said an SLC official who did not want to be quoted as team selections were not his business.

Sri Lanka Test squad:
