 Drunken motorist runs over OIC

AMPARA: The Officer-in -Charge of the Traffic Division at the Ampara Police Station was yesterday left in a life-threatening condition in hospital after he was run over by a speeding drunken motorist.

The cab belonging to the motorist smashed head on to the victim’s motorcycle on the main Ampara-Colombo Road during the early hours yesterday morning.

The OIC was on traffic duty at the time of the incident, according to police.

The driver who was found to be heavily intoxicated was promptly arrested shortly after the incident.

Lightning kills Woman

ANAMADUWA: A young mother of one died instantly after she was struck by lightning at a location in Thonigala-Anamadauwa yesterday morning.

The victim, who was the owner of a grocery shop was husking a coconut on an iron rod for a female customer when the incident took place.

The woman customer was also injured in the incident and is being treated at the local government hospital.

The authorities have repeatedly warned the public to take extra precautions to minimise damage caused by lightning that is caused by inclement weather.

Hunt on for bank robbers

ANURADHAPURA: The police were yesterday looking for two persons who had attempted to rob a bank at Anuradhapura on Thursday morning.

The pair had attempted to grab Rs. 12 million from bank employees who were transferring the money into an ATM machine.

The robbery was thwarted by a bank guard who had put up resistance forcing the suspects to flee on the motorcycle on which they had arrived.

Earlier the suspects had also flung chilli powder on the bank employees and the guards.

Covid-19 busters rounded up

POLICE HQ: Another 617 persons that had ignored Covid-19 health regulations were apprehended by police and health workers yesterday.

Those rounded up were not masked while some were loitering in groups without the required one metre distance while and in once case group was caught gambling.

A total of 6, 539 persons who had violated the Covid-19 health guidelines have been apprehended since October last year.

The authorities have launched a strict crackdown on those violating Covid-19 health regulations to arrest the fast spread of the pandemic in the country.

Confidante of drug dealer arrested

BLOEMEDHAL: A close confidante of a wanted drug dealer was arrested at a location in Bloemendhal Road with 4.527 kg of hash and 2. 22 kg of a narcotic substance known as ICE (methamphetamine).

Initial investigations have revealed that the suspect was a drug runner for alleged gangster Kimbulaele Guna who is currently living overseas.

Some Rs 400,000 in cash and a mobile phone was also recovered from the 21-year-old suspect.
