Karate girl and cricketers excel at AL exam with three As each

Several students involved in sports have done well in their academic careers according to the results of the GCE A/L examination released last Tuesday.

It showed that contrary to how some parents think, sports and studies can go hand in hand.

Among them is Hirudini Dassanayake of Girls High School in Kandy who obtained three As in the bio science stream and ranked 12th best in the Kandy district who has shown an interest in enrolling at the medical college having excelled in chess and karate.

She represented Sri Lanka at the ninth Commonwealth Karate Championship in South Africa in 2018 and was adjudged National champion in the same year. In addition she has excelled in speech and drama in the English stream.

Four Under -19 school cricket captains also bagged three As each in the commerce stream. One of them is Sandun Mendis the 2019-2020 captain of Richmond College who was also an Under 19 National team member playing as an all-rounder.

He is the younger brother of Sri Lanka cricketer Kamindu Mendis.

Maliyadeva College captain Chaluka Atapattu and Isipathana College captain Lesha Amarasinghe (Economics, Business Statistics and Accounting) also had three As each. Amarasinghe scored 926 runs with two centuries and five half centuries and claimed 33 victims as a wicket keeper of the side last season. He also represented the Sri Lanka Schools Under-15 side that toured Malaysia in 2016.

In addition Trinity College captain of the 2018-19 season Pubudu Bandara also obtained three As in the commerce stream. Earlier Hasitha Boyagoda the National youth player also bagged three As when he was the Trinity College captain.
