Wickramasinghe and Wellalage top the ranks at school cricket tourney

Ahan Wickramasinghe the skipper of Royal College, runners-up and Dunith Wellalage skipper of St. Joseph’s College, the champions, ended as leading batsman and bowler respectively in the Under 19 inter school Division One Tier A tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association (SLSCA).

Raveen de Silva the skipper of Nalanda College was the leading all-rounder of the tournament. He scored 338 runs with a century and two half centuries in six matches. He scored 170 runs against S. Thomas’ College and claimed 13 wickets for 165 runs in six matches.

St. Joseph’s College beat Royal College by 97 runs in the final at the NCC ground last week.

Eighteen school teams participated in the tournament in three groups and eight teams advanced to the quarter finals. Unbeaten Royal College Colombo advanced to the quarter final as group champion. Royal beat Trinity College Kandy, De Mazenod College Kandana, Gurukula College Kelaniya, Wesley College Colombo and D.S. Senanayake College Colombo in the first round fixtures.

Royal beat Nalanda College in the quarter final and Mahanama College Colombo in the semi final.

St. Joseph’s College beat St. Thomas’ College Matara, St. Anne’s College Kurunegala and St. Benedict’s College Kotahena in the first round fixtures . They lost to Mahanama College Colombo and St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa in the first round fixtures and beat Richmond College Galle in the quarter final and Trinity College in the semi final.

Ahan Wickrmasinghe the left hand batsman and skipper of Royal scored 474 runs in eight matches with a century and three half centuries. He made 118 against Trinity and maintained a 79.00 runs average.

Sheran Fonseka, left hand opener of St. Joseph’s scored 407 runs with four half tons in eight matches while Pawan Ratnayake the skipper of Mahanama scored 400 runs with a century and two half tons from seven matches.

Dunith Wellalage the left arm leg-spinner and skipper of St. Joseph’s claimed 15 wickets for 226 runs in eight matches while Abhishek Anandakumar the skipper and right arm off spinner of Trinity claimed 15 wickets for 241 runs in seven matches.

Sampath Nissanka the left arm paceman of Mahanama claimed 14 wickets for 196 runs in seven matches while Raveen de Silva the right arm leg-spinner and skipper of Nalanda took 13 wickets for 165 runs in six matches.

Thushara Wanasinghe the left arm leg-spinner of Gurukula claimed 12 wickets for 148 runs in five matches. (YK)
