The Tower Bridge

14 May, 2021

The Tower Bridge was built between 1886 and 1894. It spans the River Thames, connecting the London boroughs of Towers Hamlets (north side) and Southwark (south side).

It was designed by Sir Horace Jones, the city architect. The central span of the bridge can be raised to allow ships to pass through. The Tower Bridge is 244 metres long and each tower is 65 metres high.

In 1977, on the eve of the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth the Second, the Tower Bridge was painted blue, red and white.

During the celebrations to mark the 2010 Olympic Games in London a massive set of Olympic Rings was displayed on the Tower Bridge.
