Travel restrictions over weekend:

GMOA thanks President for swift action

14 May, 2021

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday thanked President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for taking swift action to impose strict travel restrictions during this weekend as requested by the GMOA and several other doctors’ organisations, GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Navin De Zoysa said.

According to Dr. Zoysa, the GMOA has further recommended closing down all liquor shops completely to curb the third wave of Covid-19.

The GMOA will soon reveal how certain media outlets which operated with the secret private agenda of getting the number of Covid-19 patients in Sri Lanka increased to make financial profits.

They underestimated the heroic Security Forces during the humanitarian operation that ended on May 18 in 2009 and in the same way they now underestimate the health staff.

Dr. Zoysa said that the GMOA will hold an exhibition on the behaviour of Sri Lankan media in connection with Covid-19.

The GMOA will reveal to the country how certain media behaved.

The GMOA sincerely calls upon all Sri Lankan media to report accurate facts given by responsible sources and not publicise inaccurate facts provided by persons and organisations with secret private agendas. It is very pathetic that the Epidemiology Unit does not have accurate and updated data on the current Covid-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka and they do not analyse and make recommendations at least with whatever data they have.

The Government could not impose the most essential travel restrictions after the Sinhala and Tamil New Year due to the wrong picture drawn by the Epidemiology Unit which did not have accurate and updated data on the Covid-19 situation in the country at that time, he added.
