The newly elected secretary of the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka (TTASL) Reza Latiff said their team led by Kanaka Herath who is the new president of the sport and State Minister of Plantations will commence district and provincial pool practices as soon as possible to spread the sport to schools by providing equipment and coaches.

Latiff is a past administrator of table tennis before leaving the country for overseas employment and claims he returned due to numerous requests to lift the standard of the sport and the welfare of players.

“I didn’t want to come back into sports administration once again but more people requested me to come back for the betterment of this sport. I honestly want to do something for this sport with my (former) team mates. I have no personal agenda and always wanted to do it in a professional manner,” said Latiff.

He said the new president and Minister Kanaka Herath was instrumental in leasing the Bandaragama Indoor Sports Complex to house the headquarters of the TTASL.

“Our president Kanaka Herath and his previous committee had a vision to conduct many programs for the betterment of this sport but due to Covid 19 engulfing the entire world those programs could not be implemented as scheduled.

“However the TTASL conducted three ranking tournaments for both men and women and two ranking tournaments for boys and girls of age groups under 18 and under 15,” said Latiff.

They had expected to hold the Junior and Senior Nationals during the first week of June but due to the present situation it has been postponed .

“Our first aim is to finalise the lease agreement for the Bandaragama Indoor Stadium and Pool complex which is highly important to uplift this sport. We also have an idea to amend the existing TTASL Constitution. We plan to conduct tournaments not only in Colombo but also the whole country which is the best way to popularize this sport . We have an idea to launch district wise TT training pools for district ranked players.

“We have long term and short term development plans to commence the High Performance Development (HPD) programme. School players are the future of this sport and we want to provide TT Tables for schools and make arrangements to advance training for coaches and umpires,” said Latiff.
