Toddler filmed with beer can - youth arrested

PELIYAGODA: A 25-year-old youth was arrested after he allegedly filmed a toddler holding a can of beer.

Police suspect that the youth had given the beer to the toddler and later filmed the incident for apparent amusement.

The incident took place at a house in Nuge Road in Peliyagoda.

The suspect was to be produced before a local magistrate later on Friday.

Two in Court for theft of coconuts

BOOSA: Two youth who had allegedly stolen 15 coconuts were released on surety bail of Rs. 100,000 each.

The youth had allegedly stolen the coconuts from a private land in Boosa, Galle.

The stolen coconuts were valued at Rs. 1,000.

Grave diggers on the mat

VELVETTITHURAI: Two people who were allegedly digging for gold from the grave of a businessman who had died 10 years were arrested at a cemetery in Velvettithurai.

The police had moved into the cemetery on a tip-off and caught the pair red-handed.

Initial investigations have revealed that the suspects had been involved in this racket for a considerable period in the area.

Man held in sex case

MOUNT LAVINIA: A 35-year-old man was taken into custody after he is alleged to have ‘hired out’ a teenaged girl for sex to several adult customers.

The man had allegedly lured customers using clandestine adverts on social media platforms.

The girl had been ‘hired out’ to customers for the past three months and the police are looking for several people who had sex with the victim. The suspect was arrested from a plush residence in Mount Lavinia. Police also recorded a statement from the girl’s mother to ascertain whether she had given her consent.

The suspect was produced before a local Magistrate and later remanded.

Quarantine party busted

KOLLUPITIYA: Nine people who were arrested for partying at a luxury apartment complex in Kollupitiya in violation of Covid-19 health regulations were ordered to be placed under compulsory home quarantine.

The group that included two foreigners and three women, were rounded up from the deck of a swimming pool on the rooftop of the complex. They were residents from three luxury apartments in the complex and were arrested following a tip-off.

Later they were produced before the Court and granted personal bail of Rs. one million each.
