20 June, 2021

Some people opine that black is powerful and it has the ability of evoking strong emotional and sentimental feelings. It can also give you a feeling of overwhelming elegance, power and sophistication. It has also got a certain degree of mystery and formality as well. Adut Akech, the world’s highest earning model seems to have got all those features in herself.

Her net worth is tremendous and is calculated as $1 million dollars. Adut was born in South Sudan, on December 25, 1999. She was brought up in Kenya. When she was barely six years, her mother moved over to Australia as a South Sudanese refugee together with Adut and her five siblings. At 16, she launched her modelling carrier by signing an agreement with Chadwick Models in Sydney, Australia.

The British Fashion Council has officially nominated Adut as the model of the year in December 2019 at the British Fashion Awards in London. She got the opportunity of being featured in the 2018 Pirelli Calendar, which was shot by Tim Walker, a celebrated photographer. Edward Enninful, one of the most sought after makeup artistes was her make-up artiste. She sat on the Hot List on models.com, which features the most in demand newcomers in the business.

Also in the same year she was recognised as one of the ‘25 Most Influential Teens of 2018’ by the prestigious Times magazine. On December 02 2019, the annual fashion awards of the British Fashion Council was held with Rihanna and Anna Wintour as guests, Adut then 19 years got crowned during an extravagant ceremony held at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Adut overwhelmed with pride and joy rushed to upload the moments of her highly talked about achievement on Instagram, where she declared herself in a caption “Meet the South Sudanese refugee who comes from nothing, who just becomes your 2019 model of the year”. Edward Enningul, editor-In-Chief of British Vogue, and Valentino’s Pier Paolo Piccioli, presented Adut her trophy. While addressing the gathering during the acceptance speech Adut said “It is important for all of us to remember that someone like me winning this award is a rarity.

This is for the young women and men who found representation and validation in my work. I want them to never be afraid of dreaming big like I once did”. Adut’s signing an exclusive with Saint Laurent for the Spring-Summer 2017 show did bring her a wave of opportunities in which the selection of her face being the most watched among the industry’s faces is one of the most significant achievements that Adut is fond of taking about.

Stimulus

She is a stimulus for many fashion magazines around the world. None could stop her becoming a mainstay at global fashion weeks. Later, she got an opportunity of signing with Elite Model Management in Paris. Dior, Givenchy, Valentino and Versace are some of the world renowned brands that she worked for. Versace, Valentino, Saint Laurent, Moschino and Fendi got included in the shoot campaigns in which she took part. Tim Walker, Inez & Vinoodh and Steven Meisel are some of the highly celebrated photographers with whom she has worked. She has frequently been featured in editorials of various international editions of Dazed and Numéro magazines, Vogue as well as i-D, among others. Adut has also been privileged to be the second black model in the history of modelling to have landed the greatly desired bridal spot in a Chanel couture show, closing the house’s Haute Couture Autumn 2018 show. She herself being a child refugee, Adut, within her capacity as a super model renders a considerable service in supporting and promoting the causes for the refugees living around the world as a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

There have been speculations that ‘The Dark Lady’ of Shakespeare’s sonnets might have been a woman of African descent. In that light, one might infer that Shakespeare’s Dark Lady too might have been a woman who was as dark as Adut.
