A massive crowd at the Parken Stadium in the Danish capital of Copenhagen paid a glowing tribute to Denmark's player Christian Eriksen as their team was beaten 1-2 by Belgium in the Euro Cup football championship on Thursday.

Eriksen collapsed on the pitch and his heart stopped beating during Denmark's opening match against Finland last week before he was rushed to hospital and is now making a positive recovery.

Doctors thought it was the end for Eriksen.

When Denmark’s players finally returned to their dressing room at the Parken Stadium, they switched on their phones to find a message from Christian Eriksen.

“You were really awesome,” Denmark’s stricken playmaker told his team-mates on the squad’s Whats app group.

With Eriksen watching on television from his hospital bed, just a stone’s throw from the same ground at which he had suffered a cardiac arrest five days earlier, Denmark produced a performance of which their comrade and the whole country could be proud.

Ultimately, the Danes were unable to provide the result they so desperately craved for.
