Gold House’s 2021 A100 List honours Kamala Harris and Naomi Osaka

4 July, 2021

Amid historic levels of anti-Asian violence, it’s crucial this Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month to not just rally against racism, but to uplift stories of joy that show the fullness of the AAPI experience. This May, Teen Vogue is shining light on that full spectrum, from history you’re not taught in school to cultural contributions we’d all be worse without.

As AAPI Heritage Month kicks off this May, Gold House announced its A100 list of the most impactful Asian and Pacific Islander leaders.

In a release on May 3, Gold House, a nonprofit collective of Asian and Pacific Islander cultural leaders, announced this year’s A100 honorees, including Vice President Kamala Harris, artist Olivia Rodrigo, athlete Naomi Osaka, actor Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, the co-founders of Stop AAPI Hate, and many more influential people across all industries.

This AAPI Heritage Month comes amid historic levels of violence against the community and increased racism that came as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This racism and violence is not new, but has received more media coverage lately as public incidents rise. While it’s important to spotlight these experiences, it’s just as imperative that AAPI joy and success be uplifted as well — which is the goal of the A100 list.

“Recognizing the achievements of the AAPI community couldn’t be more timely than right now,” Daniel Dae Kim, actor, activist, and A100 Icon Judge, said in a statement. “The tragic events of the recent past only serve to underscore the need to celebrate the many ways Asian Americans contribute to our country and the world.”

The list of incredibly accomplished AAPI people is certainly one to celebrate. Vice President Harris made history in January when she was sworn in, making her the first Black, South Asian woman to hold the office. Osaka continues to break records in tennis, and recently defeated tennis legend Serena Williams.

Also on the list is Chloé Zhao, who recently became the first woman of color to win the Oscar for Best Director for her film, Nomadland. Actor Auli’i Cravalho, K-Pop group Blackpink, YouTuber Patrick Starrr, artist Saweetie also were honoured.
