Father of free education

Sri Lanka is a very famous and beautiful country.There were great people in Sri Lanka in the past.One of them was Dr. Christopher William Wijekoone Kannangara. He was the Father of Free Education in Sri Lanka.

He was born October 13,1886 in the Southern coastal town of Hikkaduwa. His mother was Emily Wijesinghe and his father was John Daniel Wijekoone Kannangara.

His attended the Wesleyan Missionary School in Randombe and and Richmond College, Galle. Hehad four siblings.

Kannangara was regarded as an excellent all round student at Richmond College. He captained the Richmond College ‘First eleven ‘in 1903.

He was also regarded as a fine debater and actor.

He was a great politician. He joined Anagarika Dharmapala’s historically significant ’Temperance Movement’ and started his political journey. Kannangara was appointed as the first Chairman of the Executive Committee on Education and went on to become the first Minister of Education of Ceylon in 1931.

C.W.W. Kannangara did a great service to this country. He died on September 23, 1969. We Sri Lankans owe him a great debt of gratitude.
