Sprinter Medhani Jayamanne, the niece of Susanthika Jayasinghe, has qualified to run in the 100 and 200 metres events at the World Junior Championships to be held in Nairobi, Kenya from August 17 to 22.

She qualified in the 100m event by returning a personal best time of 11.85 seconds at the Junior Trials held at the Sugathadasa Stadium on July 27.

Jayamanne had earlier qualified for the 200m during the Inter-State Championship held in India earlier this month.

The other to qualify is 400m runner Isuru Kaushalya who returned a personal best time of 46.90 seconds to win the event.

RD Bandara (47.55 sec) and Sithum Jayawardena (47.86) finished second and third in the 400m event that would enable Sri Lanka to send a mixed 4x400m relay team for the event.

Tharushi Karunaratne is another athlete who has qualified for the World Juniors in the 800m. She won the 400m women’s final in a time of 55.19 seconds while Lashima Mendis finished second clocking 55.29 seconds. Some athletes failed to qualify by a narrow margin. However, they may still get a chance through their world ranking positions in the event. (TBR)
