Maliyadeva boy and Dharmapala girl win chess titles

Pahasarani Arunodya of Dharmapala Maha Vidyalaya, Ratnapura and DRM Ratnayake of Maliyadeva College Kurunegala clinched the titles of the North Western Open men’s event and Sabaragamuwa Open women’s event at the National online Novices Chess championship concluded on Friday.

Ratnayake and his college mate DCBK Seneviratne managed to score 6.5 points out of seven games being unbeaten throughout in the Novices Division of the North Western Province but due to better tie-breaker points Ratnayake won the Championship with the Gold medal while Seneviratne had to be satisfied with the Silver medal.

At the Sabaragmuwa Women’s event, Pahasarani Arunodya clinched the title outright by winning 6.5 points out of seven games being unbeaten.

Arunodya won the Championship and the Gold Medal while SMI Mudalige (Furguson High School) won the second place in the event and the only game she lost was played with the champion Arunodya.

The Novices Division of the Sri Lanka Online National Rapid Chess Championships 2021 is planned for seven regions in the Western, Central, North Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and Eastern provinces.

The top 25 players of the North-Western Open event and the top 16 players of the Sabaragamuwa women’s event will obtain the license to the appropriate Majors Division Chess Championships to be held from late August.
