A three member motor cycle racing team known as the Pathirage family comprising of father Mangala and his two son Nikila and Vinula are going places on the local and international scene unsung without financial backers or sponsors to sing their praises.

The family has no sponsor or financial backer and spend their own funds to race in Sri Lanka as well as overseas ending up on the podium winning either first, second or third places for five consecutive years.

The trio race on bikes ranging from 150cc to 250cc on tarmac.

Mangala Pathirage, 52 is a product of Royal College and is currently the most senior motorcyclist in the country having first entered the racing arena in 1987 and has been a champion on bikes some of them ranging from 600cc to 1000cc.

His two sons, Nikila now age 22 and Vinula 19, took to racing events before even entering their teens following in the footsteps of their mentor and father with no fear of speed other than the excitement it brings.

Nikila and Vinula represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Motorcycle Championships and won a third place finish against racers from 13 Asian countries.

They last took part in the 2019 Asian championships.

The two brothers Nikila and Vinula also represented Sri Lanka at the 2017 US Open in Dallas, Texas and won seventh which was a great honour for the country.

Their story makes them the first trio from one family in Sri Lanka and the Asian region to have come together to win laurels and trophies on the racing track.

What should be of concern to motor racing fans in Sri Lanka is that the father and sons trio do not receive any money from anyone or from sponsors to showcase their skills on the track as they meet all their expenses from their own pockets.
