One dies in freak accident

NARAHENPITA: One person died after a mound of earth fell on two people who were placing underground water pipes on the main road near the Polhena Junction in Narahenpita.

The man who was not identified has been described as a 35-year-old resident of Nawalapitiya.

The two workers were brothers.

Man’s death: Two women held

MULLERIYAWA: Two women were arrested in connection with the recent fatal shooting of a man in the Mulleriyawa area.

They were rounded up from a safe house in Bandagiriya, Hambantota.

The suspects are aged 18 and 55 years.

Earlier, five other suspects were arrested in connection with the same incident.

The 42-year-old victim was gunned down during the early hours of October 26 by two people who had arrived at his home on a motorcycle.

Over 620 held in special operation

WESTERN PROVINCE: Over 620 people were arrested in a special police operation carried out in the Western Province on Friday from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

Among those arrested were 91 people who had been sought on court warrants.

According to the police, 82 suspects were arrested for having heroin and another 114 with cannabis.

One-thousand bottles of illicit liquor were also seized along with 192 suspects.

SI released after 18 months in detention

COLOMBO: A Sub Inspector of Police (SI) who had been detained for 18 months on suspected drug-related charges after the Criminal Investigation Department told court that there was no evidence against the officer.

The SI was arrested in August last year on suspicion that he had provided firearms to a group of police officers allegedly involved in the drug trade.

Suspect held with revolver

PANNIPITIYA: An associate of an organised criminal operative Sanka Shirantha alias Bloemendhal Sanka, was arrested with an Italian-made revolver by the STF during a raid at Pannipitiya in Maharagama on Friday.

Investigations revealed that Thotalanga Channa, a close associate of Bloemendhal Sanka, who is abroad, had given the firearm to the suspect before leaving the country.

The 46-year-old suspect was later handed over to the Maharagama Police for further investigations.
