The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) expressed its displeasure for not gazetting the regulations for the election of office-bearers of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) as promised during a meeting with the Health Minister on October 12, GMOA Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando said.

According to Dr. Fernando, a decision was made during the meeting between the GMOA and the Health Minister last month to gazette the regulations in connection with the election of office-bearers of the GMOA within a week. More than one month has passed without gazetting them.

He said that the election of office-bearers was scheduled to be held in 2018, three years ago. It is getting delayed again and again.

Regulations have been prepared, but not gazetted. The accurate composition of the SLMC cannot be assured without an election, Dr. Fernando said.

The SLMC is a statutory body established under an Act passed in Parliament. It is the only institution responsible for ensuring the standard of MBBS doctors and medical education in Sri Lanka, he added.
