Para athletes take wing for Asian Youth Games

The Sri Lanka team for Asian Para Youth Games: Janani Dananjana (T46 Arm Amputee 100m T46, 200m T46, long jump), Safran Mahammudu (T46 long jump), Isuru Hasanka (T47- 100m, 200m, long jump), Jason Jayawardena (T/F- 40 Dwarf - 100m T40, discus throw F 40, shot put F 40), Ravindu Chiranjaya (T11 visual imp 100m, 200m, 400m), Naveed Raheem (swimming S10, 50m free style, S10, 100m free style), Galina Basnayake swimmer (S10, 50m free style, 100m free style, 400m free style) and Pansilu Pasan (guide runner 100m, 200m, 400m)

An eight member Sri Lanka team left yesterday to take part in the Asian Para Youth Games in Bahrain from December 2 to 6.

Five athletes, Janani Dananjana (T 46 arm amputee), Safran Mahammudu (T 46), Isuru Hasanka (T-47), Jason Jayawardena (T/ F 40) and Ravindu Chiranjaya (T 11 visual impairment) together with two swimmers Naveed Raheem and Galina Basnayake ( S-10) are included in the team while Pansilu Pasan will accompany the team as guide runner to Ravindu Chiranjaya.

Jason Jayawardena the-16 year old athlete of the team will compete in field events as well as the discuss throw and shot put in the T/F Dwarf category (below 130 cm height).

Jayawardena at four feet one inch has already achieved more than a seven metre distance.

“More than 800 athletes from 32 countries (under-20 age) will compete at this youth meet and the Sri Lanka team is brimming with good confidence,” said Chef de Mission of the team Priyantha Pieris who is also one of the vice presidents of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC).

Julian Bolling the South Asian Gold medal swimmer and swimming coach accompanied the team as coach for the two swimmers while Nalinda Senerath will join the tour party as athletic coach.

Meanwhile MAS as the official clothing partner of the Para athletes signed an MOU with the National Paralympic Committee last Tuesday.
