Power disruptions between 6-9 pm likely

5 December, 2021

Disruptions to the electricity supply are possible for at least one hour between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. in several parts of the island until the Norochcholai coal power plant is up and running again, a spokesman for the Ministry of Power said.

Operations at all electricity grid sub-stations were restored on Friday after a major power outage, however, the Norochcholai power station is yet to be fully functional.

According to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), the Norochcholai power plant had begun supplying 300 MW of its full electricity capacity to the national grid by yesterday morning. It would take at least three days to add the remaining 600 MW to the national grid,

Disruptions to the power supply were experienced islandwide on Friday, December 3 at around 11.30 a.m. owing to a breakdown in the main transmission line. The electricity supply to several areas in Colombo was restored at around 2 p.m. Later, the power supply in Anuradhapura-Habarana, Laxapana-Athurugiriya and Kotmale-Biyagama transmission lines were restored.

Although steps were taken to restore power after a few hours, many parts of the country were in the dark until Friday night due to the imbalance in the power supply system. However, the CEB said the electricity supply was restored by midnight on Friday.
