Indika Dissanayake, Manoj Wijesinghe and Thilanka Palagasinghe won bronze medals at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan yesterday, days after Srimali Samarakoon won a gold medal.

Wijesinghe won the bronze medal lifting a total of 264 kgs while Palagasinghe secured his bronze lifting 145 kgs in the Clean and Jerk and 116 kgs in the snatch for a total of 261 kgs.

Earlier on the second day of the championship, Srimali Samarakoon won a gold medal in the women’s 45 kgs category by lifting 136 kgs to qualify for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Twenty athletes from Sri Lanka that includes 10 women are contesting the championships from December 7 to 17.

The Commonwealth Championships, the most important qualifying event for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, was earlier scheduled to be held in Singapore in October but was moved to Uzbekistan due to covid-19 issues.
