Ashinsani, oozing with talent

2 January, 2022

It is no exaggeration to say that there have emerged many talented filmmakers who can elevate our film industry up to the highest level. Such young filmmakers have earned global recognition, proving that the future of our Sinhala cinema is better.

The Youth Observer which always paves the way for our young talent caught up with another young filmmaker. She is Ashinsani Pathirana who is better known as a short filmmaker as well as a photographer.

Born and bred in Anuradhapura, Ashinsani had her education at the Thalama National College. Not only her inborn skills but also her long flowing tresses will testify her inner artiste.

Currently, she is studying at a private university.

Beginning of her journey

Ashinsani who has a knack for filmmaking even in her childhood, has made several short films. Her parents too are interested in the field of films.

Therefore, Ashinsani has received continuous support from her family members.

To my question about her childhood memories, she said that she used to focus on the technical side of films. “Whenever I watch films, I focus on the technical side because I can study filmmaking by watching them,” she said. “We cannot sharpen our creativity only by following courses at institutes.”

It can be said that Ashinsani has risen from ashes. It is because of her courage and determination with which she faced hardships and problems. Evidently, nothing could obstruct her journey. “When I entered the field of Cinema, I had to overcome many hardships.

This is a male dominated field. If so, how can a girl survive in this field? I am still following a degree program at a university, so how can I manage my time? These were the main problems that I had.

Finally, I made a decision to do what I love most,” she said in a happy tone.

Achievements

Ashinsani’s cinematic creations will reveal the brilliance in her skills. Her maiden cinematic creation titled “Truth or Dare” went on to win international awards.

Surprisingly, her first short film was selected to four international film festivals.

The main role of the film ‘ Micheal’ was played by another young actor named Savithra Umesh Dharmapriya. The film has been woven around the tragic situation that Michael had to undergo.

Moreover, ‘Truth and Dare’ has become the turning point in her life because this short movie has enabled her to widen her horizons.

“After this film, several filmmakers gave me opportunities to work.

For instance, Lakshan Perera gave me an opportunity to work as the camera director for his youtube series titled ‘Last Message’.”

To my question about her victory, she said,”It is still unimaginable. Because never had I expected a global recognition for my maiden short film. I have to thank my parents, Savithra Dharmapriya, Mahesh Ekanayake, Adheesha Ranatunge, Prabodha Lakshan and Asela Thilakaratne.” Other than ‘Truth and Dare’, she has made several films such as ‘Slode’.

Support

We cannot ignore the support from our family members when we achieve our goals. What is behind our success is our parents’ tears and blood.

“I have to say that my parents helped me in many ways. My father acted in one of my films. I can’t achieve anything without their support,” she said.

However, those at the helm of this country should give more opportunities to talented filmmakers like Ashinsani.
