Air Force sports out in full swing after lapse

The ninth edition of the Air Force Commander’s Cup Golf Tournament is scheduled to tee off on January 21 at the Eagles’Golf Link in China Bay in the vicinity of Trincomalee harbour.

The tournament organized by the Air Force under the guidance of its commander Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana is sponsored by Dialog for the second successive year.

Air Marshal Pathirana said this year there will be another Trophy added and named as the Eagles Challenge Trophy for serving men and women of the Army, Navy and Air Force. He further said that already over 120 entries have been received for the Championship made up of 85 civilians (men and women) and 35 service personnel and that participants should be members of a registered golf club in Sri Lanka.

Addressing the media, Group Chief Officer of Dialog, Navin Peiris, said that it was a pleasure to be associated in a tournament contested by leading golfers in the country.

Meanwhile Air Marshal Pathirana revealed that the Defence Services Sports Board has given the green light for the Air Force Sports Council to organize sporting activities of the Services for two years from 2022 to 2023.

The Air Force Sports Council has already drawn up the sports calendar for the year 2022 and have added a Beach Volleyball Championship as a new sport from July 16 to 23 possibly with foreign participants at Negombo.

The second part of the 71st anniversary celebrations of the Air Force will see the annual Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya set to run for three days for men and women from March 4 to 6.

Male riders will cover a distance of 400 kilo metres during the three days while the women competitors will take starting orders on March 6 from Puttalam and peddle for a distance of 90 kilometres to the finish line in Katunayake.

“This is an event cyclists from all parts of the country get an opportunity to face tough challenges from foreign riders as they too are expected to compete in this event,” said Air Marshal Pathirana.

Air Force will also conduct the Commander’s Cup Rugby Championship in association with one of the clubs CH and FC.
