Ranatunga in coaching role

Arjuna Ranatunga who led Sri Lanka to the World Cup victory in 1996 has been appointed as head coach of Asia Lions squad that will take part in the inaugural Legends League Cricket (LLC) tournament that commenced on January 20 in Oman.

Another former Sri Lankan player Mario Villavarayan will be Ranatunga’s assistant coach cum strength and conditioning coach of the team.

Former Sri Lankan cricketers Sanath Jayasuriya, Tillekaratne Dilshan, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralidaran, Upul Tharanga, Sanath Jayasuriya, Ajantha Mendis, Dilhara Fernando and Nuwan Kulasekara are in the Asia Lions squad.

Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq was named as the captain.

Asia Lions Squad:

Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralidaran, Kamran Akmal, Chaminda Vaas, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Tillekaratne Dilshan, Azhar Mahmood, Upul Tharanga, Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Mohammed Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Mohammed Yousuf, Umar Gul, Asghar Afghan, Nuwan Kulasekara, Ajantha Mendis and Dilhara Fernando.


World Giants and India Maharajahs are the other two teams in the fray and the tournament’s final will be on January 29. (TBR)
