Why was she selected?

1 May, 2022

Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) conducted trials to select players to represent Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmington. They were to select four boys and three girls plus three officials.

However it is reported that the selection of the girls’ team has been mired in controversy with one player selected on favouritism.

She is said to have contested the doubles event at the trials that won convincingly but her partner who is more experienced had been left out.

It is alleged that this girl who is selected is working in the company where the president of the SLB Mohan de Silva is its chairman and her selection was favoured over the more experienced player who was the doubles partner during the trials.

This girl will be partnered by another girl who participated in the mixed doubles event at the trials.

When it comes to foreign tournaments, badminton is a sport were no Sri Lankan player has gone beyond the first round in any highly rated tournament.
