Death of Yogarani Thevathasan

15 May, 2022

Yogarani Thevathasan, a famed journalist of the 1960s and 1970s, passed away peacefully last weekend at her residence in Colombo at the age of 94.

A Sub-Editor and feature writer at the Sunday Observer and the Daily News, for over 25 years, Mrs Thevathasan migrated to England in 1973 with her husband, Dr Victor Thevathasan, and two children where she soon took up a position with Thomson Regional Newspapers in Wales.

In 2004, she published a collection of her columns titled ‘Ink On My Fingers’. Her daughter, Nandika, republished a selection of these columns in 2021.

Renowned for her sharp wit and vivacious personality, she would regale colleagues at Lake House with hilarious narration of her daily encounters with people and personalities publishing a column on the foibles and frivolities of some society ladies of the day under the pen name of ‘Cleo’.

Yogarani Thevathasan schooled at Ladies College, Colombo 7 and was a graduate of the University of Ceylon. She is survived by her children, Dr Nandika Doble and Dr Pravin Thevathasan as well as six grandchildren on whom she doted. Her death is a sad loss for Sri Lankan journalism and to her friends and devoted family, but the memories of her contribution to Sri Lankan journalism live on.
