PM invites SJB to join Govt sans party politics

15 May, 2022

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has written to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa inviting the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to be a part of the new Government. In a letter dated May 14, he invited the Opposition Leader to join hands to form a neutral Government sans party politics to steer the country out of the economic crisis.

“We all know the country is faced with a gigantic economic, social and political crisis. It is getting worse by the day. Our decisions today will determine the future course of our country,” he had written in the letter adding, “Today we are confronted with a historical obligation to protect the future of our young generation.”

The SJB has been called upon to extend support to the ongoing “collective effort” to resolve the burning issues of the people without further delay and stabilise the economy with international assistance. UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday that the Prime Minister will not form a UNP Government but an interim Government which comprises all parties in Parliament, to save the nation, “We hope all parties will join the Government and resolve the economic crisis faced by the people. Sri Lanka’s economy is in a grave situation with foreign reserves having gone down to the lowest in history, while people are suffering without essential goods. It is essential to resolve this crisis and ease the burden of the people,” Wijewardene said.

“Allegations that the UNP leader has got into a deal with Rajapaksas are not true,” he added.

“Some foreign countries and donor agencies have welcomed the appointment of Wickremesinghe as the new PM. We are hopeful that they will assist Sri Lanka as political stability is established,” he said.

When this edition went to press, the Opposition Leader had reportedly refused to accept any positions in the new Government saying the solutions to the problems facing the country must be found in keeping with the people’s aspirations.

However, he had said that the SJB will support, as a responsible Opposition, any correct decision taken to ‘find solutions’ to the economic problems.
