Sink differences to revive economy – IDRES chief

15 May, 2022

The Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies (IDRES), Manjula Gajanayaka has called upon all Members of Parliament to set aside petty differences and actively contribute to revive the economy.

He said that reviving the economy should take precedence above every other demand and commended Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for taking up the challenge and hoped that the likes of Harsha de Silva, Eran Wickramaratne, Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, M. A. Sumanthiran, Mano Ganeshan, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Dullas Alahapperuma, Ali Sabry and Kanchana Wijesekera would take up portfolios in the new Cabinet.

He said that the main demand of the protesters at Galle Face was for the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa which should be addressed at the same time and suggested that steps should be taken to abolish the Executive Presidency and introduce the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

Gajanayaka said that it was the national responsibility of lawmakers to impart their expertise at this time of need and the responsibility of the voter to elect statesmen and women to Parliament in the future.

Gajanayaka said that it was imperative that action be taken to recover the money which had been plundered from the nation through various means and bring those responsible before court. This was another reason why members of the Opposition should take up key portfolios in the new Cabinet or like in 2015 the miscreants would go scot free.
