Ven. Sobhitha Thera flays Stalin over Kachchativu remark

29 May, 2022

Ven Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera yesterday criticised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for proposing to claim Sri Lanka’s Kachchativu Island to India at a Government function held in Tami Nadu in the presence of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had shown zero interest in the matter, according to Indian media reports.

Ven. Sobhitha Thera asked if this was how Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin was going to resolve problems of his State by fishing in troubled waters at a time Indian Prime Minister Modi has declared his full commitment to help Sri Lanka to come out of its economic crisis.

He had apparently chosen the wrong stage and time to declare that it was the right time to retrieve Kachchativu Island from Sri Lanka.

Despite the country’s economic difficulties, the thera noted that there has been a lot of peace and interaction between Tamils and Sinhalese in recent months.

“In fact, Tamils and Sinhalese people have banded together as brothers and sisters to support peaceful protests in Colombo. Despite the country’s growing economic woes, there is a growing sense of national unity.”

As a result of the current situation, remarkable friendship has developed between the Tamil and Sinhalese communities, which is possibly the only silver lining in the gloomy cloud of issues that our countrymen face.
