Fifteen new meet records at Junior National Athletics

Fifteen new meet records were established at the Junior National Athletic meet held at the Sugathadasa Stadium over four days recently.

Amesha Hettiarachchi of Girls High School Kandy achieved two new records while Amesha set a new meet record in the 400 metres hurdles for girls’ under-20 with a time of 1m 01.04 seconds during the heat in the morning.

She then set another new meet record in the afternoon when she won the gold medal in the 100m hurdles event with a time of 14.86 seconds.

Madushani Herath from Nannapurawa MV Bibile also set a new meet record in the long jump event for girls’ under-18 years with a leap of 5.98m.

Talented javelin thrower from St. Peter’s Rumesh Tharanga established another meet record with a distance of 69.3 metres in the event. Tharanga has already qualified for the forthcoming World Junior Athletic Championship and sealed his place for the tour if it becomes a reality.

In this event Dinesh Dilshan of St. Mary’s College, Chilaw was placed second with a personal best effort of 64.95m.

Nihinsa Mandini of Yatiyana MV Matara established a new meet record in the hammer throw for girls’ under-20 with a distance of 37.47 metres.

Heshan Abeysekara from St. Peter’s, Bambalapitiya who also qualified for the World Junior meet set a new meet record in the boys’ under-20 long jump event. He did well to clear 7.76m.
