Peterites post exciting 25-12 win over Dharmaraja

St. Peter’s College registered a thrilling bonus-point win in their Dialog inter-school League rugby Championship match by overcoming Dharmaraja College Kandy by 27 (5 tries, 1 conversion) to 12 (2 tries, 1 conversion) at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

At halftime the scores were deadlocked at 12-12.

St. Peter’s, who had a great game in their first outing gave an excellent display both in attack and defence and after the turnaround played in the same manner as during the first half to keep the fighting Rajans at bay.

The Peterites opened the scoring when winger Dineth Ranasinghe scored a try in the sixth minute of the game and the conversion was fired across by Vindya de Mel for a 7-0 lead.

Peterite nippy scrum half Rajitha Ekanayake ran all the way to brace a try in the 15th minute which De Mel failed to convert but the home team went into a 12-0 lead.

Dharmaraja scrum half Thanthirige touched down for a try which was converted by fly half Wijesiri to cut down the lead to 12-7 and scored again through an unconverted try by Bandara to equal the scores 12-12 which stood at half time.

After the turn around, the Peterites increased their score to 17-12 when winger Vishenka de Silva scored an unconverted try.

They went into a further lead when replacement center Umeth Ishara touched down for an unconverted try for a 22-12 lead.

Finally, the gallant St. Peter’s College bowed out worthy winners by 27 points to 12 when their outstanding flanker Hashen Madugaspe crashed through for a splendid unconverted try.

Referee Aaqil Jamaldeen had a fine game with the whistle.
