Ninety-six cycle deaths reported

3 July, 2022

Nearly 1,209 road accidents have been reported to police stations countrywide from January 2022 as of today and of these accidents, 96 people who had been riding bicycles on the main roads carelessly had met with fatal accidents.

At present, people ride bicycles to their workplaces and for other day-to-day urgent needs on main roads due to the shortage of fuel in the country. Consequently, reckless riding and ignoring road signs and road safety rules have led to many road accidents during the past five months. Police Headquarters has informed all police stations countrywide in this connection.

The Police Department will educate cyclists on road safety rules, careful riding and paying attention to other road users while riding, and to rectify the technical defects of bicycles to ensure safe riding. These measures to educate cyclists need to be carried out by all police stations countrywide in the next two weeks to ensure accident-free main roads for cyclists, a senior Police Chief in Kurunegala told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

Around 5,600 police officers will be deployed for this operation to educate cyclists within the next two weeks, he said. Hence, all cyclists have been cautioned to ride bicycles with care and concentration to reduce the number of deaths.
