3 July, 2022

An epic new biopic of the legendary King of Rock ‘n’ Roll Elvis Presley released on Friday in theatres worldwide. The movie depicts the life and times of Elvis, titled simply Elvis, his name together with his talent impacted his fans across the world.

Directed by Baz Luhrmann, is known for extravagant productions and powering performances by his actors and actresses. Together with Baz, Austin Bulter plays Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker the money greed, cunning and the man responsible for Elvis’s success and downfall.

The movie opens with the ambitious superhero fantasying boy, who follows the African American community and their way of music and dance. As the film progress young Elvis whose music enthrals the audience across Memphis, within no time Colonel Tom Parker, discovers his potential, entices him with road success and manages his musical and acting career. The legend is born, and Elvis goes to live the life wanted to live.

From the beginning to the end, the movie highlights some of the most significant happenings. The rebellious young man to an emotional side of the king. The political events influence his song writing and music, and he does what he believes in doing. The service in the military, marriage, fatherhood, the Elvis empire and drug addiction.

The relationship between Colonel Parker and Elvis was perfectly portrayed. Elvis trusts Colonel as a father figure after his mother’s death and the Colonel manipulates his way around Elvis’s entertainment career. Both the actors should be nominated for an Oscar, Tom Hanks for best-supporting actor and Austin Butler for best actor. And some additional nominations too, for hair and makeup and costume. The makeup artist and costume designer had done an excellent job on the actor.

Each actor and actress justified the roles like the mother Gladys Presley (Helen Thomson) a very dominating and constantly dissatisfied with everything. There was no dull moment, and every scene was well reacted. One such scene is the song If I Can Dream, from Elvis’s swag walk, moment and voice, which was indeed an emotional one. Towards the last stages of his life of drug addiction, heavy drinking and women, and the energetic and magnifying performance at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. The movie carried very detail so well, it felt like the king was alive again and Austin is Elvis reborn, everything about him was well detailed. The style, walk and gyrating movements which has mesmerised the audience for decades and are passed down even today to performers.

The movie deserves 10 and even a second or third watch is absolutely worthy of this movie.

The movie is directed by Baz Luhrmann, and starring Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge and Richard Roxburgh.

Elvis is showing at all Scope Cinemas.
