The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has decided to support acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the parliamentary vote to be held on July 20 to elect the country’s next President, the Party’s Gen. Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam said. This unanimous decision was taken at the SLPP parliamentary group meeting at the SLPP headquarters on Friday, July 15. Political sources said that over 120 parliamentarians have extended their support to acting President Wickremesinghe. Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the acting President on Friday soon after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation was made official. Parliament will elect a new President on July 20 and nominations will be called next Tuesday, July 19. Following the voting in the House, a Member of Parliament will be appointed for the Presidency on July 20.
